When will Amazon come to Denmark? This is possibly one of the questions I have been asked over a million times here on the blog, especially after I wrote the post about marketing on Amazon.
Jokes aside.
The short answer is: I don’t know, and frankly, probably no one else does—not even Amazon.
My guess is that they constantly face big differences between the various countries in Europe, which makes scaling more difficult than it has been for them in the US.
Currency, language, e-commerce behavior—there are many variables that they have probably only recently gotten fully in order. It must be a logistical nightmare across so many borders.
However, we know that Amazon is opening in Sweden. They have announced this themselves, and in their job postings for the Swedish market, it’s clear they are also looking for people to help expand into the Danish market.
Amazon is already in Denmark
What I find a bit ironic is that we’re waiting for Amazon to launch their platform in Danish—our dear mother tongue.
But why? Amazon is already in Denmark.
According to analysis of the most popular webshops Danes shopped on last year, Amazon already ranks seventh among the webshops Danes use the most—and that’s without a Danish version.
That was also one of the reasons I chose to test the platform with several brands a few years ago, to learn how Jeff Bezos built the world’s largest e-commerce machine.
And I can promise you, it is highly streamlined—almost to the point where getting started selling on the platform is a longer process.
My advice if you’re considering Amazon
- Start an Amazon seller account today
- Consider testing the platform in Germany or the United Kingdom (see why a bit further down)
- Upload your products, or start with one product to learn the methodology
- Learn from Amazon’s way of scaling their platform—you can definitely bring elements back to your own shop
My experience is that you learn an incredible amount from their interface system, which can be applied to your own platform. At the same time, you gain maximum insight that you will surely need when Amazon eventually enters the Danish market.
Amazon is here to stay—and so are marketplaces in general. Souq, Alibaba, and Wish are also growing, so having this knowledge moving forward is very valuable.
As shown below, Germany and the UK are the two largest markets after the US.
