Maybe you’ve already heard of the new AI tool called ChatGPT? This new digital tool has become a major topic of conversation in online marketing, due to the many possibilities that this new AI tool opens up.

To be more precise, the name ChatGPT stands for “Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer.”

The tool can best be described as a chatbot that, using artificial intelligence, generates natural text based on a question asked by the user.

Read more about chatbots in my guide to messenger bots here.

Pre-trained Transformer refers to the tool continuously transforming its capabilities by training with large amounts of data when users initiate a conversation with the chatbot.

The text generated by ChatGPT will, in most cases, be meaningful and is designed to simulate an interaction based on a natural conversation between people.

But who is behind ChatGPT, and what is the purpose of having such an advanced AI tool that is free and easily accessible to users?

OpenAI in short

The research institution OpenAI is behind ChatGPT and aims to research artificial intelligence to promote its use with a focus on safety and ethics.

This increased focus on safety and ethics is evident when you sign up for a free account on ChatGPT, where you will encounter several pop-up boxes informing you about how ChatGPT strives to create meaningful and factual data.

However, the pop-up boxes also indicate that despite the so-called “safeguards” attached to the tool, one should still be aware of potentially offensive or misleading information, and therefore be mindful of biased content.
These are among the criticisms ChatGPT faces, but according to OpenAI, they will be corrected over time due to the aforementioned pre-trained transformer technology.

What can ChatGPT be used for?

ChatGPT opens up a wide range of possibilities, and below I’ve listed a few contexts where the AI tool is already being widely used:

ChatGPT can generate text for almost any context and can even do so in a specific writing style. In other words, you can ask the chatbot to create an email that you want to include in your email automation flow, based on previous emails you have sent to your customers.

ChatGPT can thus generate an email that matches the writing style and wording of an email your customers have previously received, helping you save time on creating future newsletters and follow-up emails.

Criticism of ChatGPT

Although ChatGPT itself is a tool that can open up many possibilities, like many other digital tools, it does come with some limitations and challenges.

For example, ChatGPT still struggles to pick up on subtle nuances in language, and as mentioned earlier, the chatbot can be influenced by offensive stereotypes.

However, this will gradually be fine-tuned, as the AI tool learns from the many questions it receives from users. It will naturally detect patterns, such as the use of metaphors or the types of questions being asked, and thus it will continuously improve itself.
