optimization<\/a>, Google Adwords, and social media in addition to traditional channels like TV and radio. Many people mistakenly believe that SMS and social media have replaced email, and that no one opens emails anymore.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the case. <strong>Emails are still very much alive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Which channels are best for attracting customers?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3085 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/emailmarketingfakta-1030x768-1.png\" alt=\"email marketing facts\" width=\"632\" height=\"471\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As clearly shown, emails still generate significantly more sales than Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, several analyses also show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailmunch.com\/blog\/trends-that-will-shape-the-realms-of-email-marketing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">email marketing<\/a> is the best source with the highest CLV &#8211; Customer Lifetime Value, because you can build a relationship with your customers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\">\n<p><strong>What is CLV?<\/strong> CLV stands for <strong>&#8220;Customer Lifetime Value&#8221;<\/strong> and is used by growth hackers and online marketers to determine how much a customer is worth over their lifetime. By knowing the CLV, it&#8217;s easier for the company to determine how high CPA <strong>&#8220;(Cost Per Acquisition)&#8221;<\/strong> should be. CPA means what you pay for a new customer. It doesn&#8217;t make sense to spend 1,000 DKK on a new customer if the customer is only worth 500 DKK over their lifetime.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_started_with_email_marketing\"><\/span>Get started with email marketing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Choosing_an_email_client\"><\/span>Choosing an email client<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/marketing-email-platforms\/\">countless different email platforms<\/a> on the market.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t really have any preferences I want to impose on you &#8211; the most important thing is to choose a tool that fits your budget and is so easy to use that you don\u2019t need a programmer to set it up.<\/p>\n<div>An email client is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/marketing-tools\/\">software<\/a> that collects email addresses, also called &#8216;leads,&#8217; organizes them into lists, and lets you create and send campaigns to your potential customers<\/div>\n<p><strong>The most popular clients are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mailchimp<\/li>\n<li>Aweber<\/li>\n<li>Infusionsoft<\/li>\n<li>Campaignmonitor<\/li>\n<li>Klaviyo (my personal favorite for e-commerce).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"greenbox\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> The most important thing is that you don\u2019t have to make the perfect choice from the start &#8211; you can always change later. For example, Mailchimp is great for beginners since it\u2019s free for up to 2,500 subscribers, though full features require a paid plan. So choose based on your budget, not on your ideal scenario.<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Creating_your_segments\"><\/span>Creating your segments<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When signing up for newsletters on major shopping sites like Zalando, you\u2019re often asked for your gender and sometimes age. <strong>Why?<\/strong> So they can send you more targeted newsletters.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t need to be complicated, but consider how you\u2019ll segment your lists.<\/p>\n<p>In Mailchimp, you can create multiple lists to segment your audience &#8211; similar to how you\u2019d do for Facebook or Google Ads. You might segment by gender, age, interests, or industry, depending on your business.<\/p>\n<p>However, this is becoming less common as behavior-based newsletters are on the rise &#8211; I\u2019ll explain more about this later.<\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Don\u2019t make it too difficult to join your list &#8211; you\u2019ll get fewer sign-ups. The more fields people have to fill out, the lower your conversion rate will be<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_more_sign-ups\"><\/span>Get more sign-ups<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The hardest part of email marketing is getting more sign-ups &#8211; quality sign-ups, mind you.<\/p>\n<div class=\"redbox\">Don&#8217;t buy bad leads in the market just because they are cheap. I cannot stress this enough.<\/div>\n<p>Instead, get your sign-ups from people who actually want to receive your newsletters. There&#8217;s nothing worse than receiving newsletters you don&#8217;t want.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you do that?<\/p>\n<p>There are countless strategies &#8211; I&#8217;ll cover a few of them below.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Integrations_on_the_website\"><\/span>Integrations on the website<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Welcome mat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you noticed the dropdown that appears over the page when you visit my website?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Here\u2019s an example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>I&#8217;m running an A\/B test with several different ones, so it may vary which one you see.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3117\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Skaermbillede-2016-06-21-kl.-19.40.43-1030x654-1.png\" alt=\"Screenshot 2016-06-21 at 19.40.43\" width=\"980\" height=\"622\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is called a welcome mat, which can be set up using tools like Sleeknote, a Danish platform for creating email signup forms.<\/p>\n<p>It works like this: you set up a kind of landing page that slides down over the page when people visit &#8211; here they can sign up for my newsletter if they want.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Here\u2019s an example of how my campaign converts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3118 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Skaermbillede-2016-06-21-kl.-19.39.01-1030x459-1.png\" alt=\"Screenshot 2016-06-21 at 19.39.01\" width=\"692\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This means I get between 2-10 new sign-ups for my newsletter every day. I&#8217;m not very aggressive, so I leave people alone for a few days after they&#8217;ve clicked it away once.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pop-ups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They can be super annoying &#8211; but they can also be extremely effective!<\/p>\n<p>It all depends on what you offer &#8211; if you have good content that people want to receive, pop-ups work really well. If people don&#8217;t like your content, they will click no.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use Sleeknote (or another plugin for WordPress) to create pop-ups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>This pop-up can be created as mentioned in Sleeknote<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It converts at about 15%<\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\">\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3128 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Skaermbillede-2016-06-23-kl.-09.32.49.png\" alt=\"Screenshot 2016-06-23 at 09.32.49\" width=\"558\" height=\"560\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A few good tips for optimizing your pop-ups<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/marketing-tools\/\">Test the time it takes before the popup appears (I use Sleeknote for this)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Run A\/B tests so you test multiple messages against each other<\/li>\n<li>Use different call to actions such as free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Inline click-triggers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever been reading a blog post and then there&#8217;s a box where you can download a PDF book for free?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s one of the newer methods called inline click triggers. This method requires the user to actively click a link, which triggers a popup where they can enter their email to receive a free e-book or other items.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is how it works in practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><video loop=\"loop\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\"><\/video><\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Be careful not to have too many annoying things popping up on your screen. It harms the user&#8217;s experience. So keep an eye on your bounce rate when playing with pop-ups, etc., and also make sure to keep track of your site speed. Some plugins can be very heavy to run.<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"E-books\"><\/span>E-books<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The best way to get more sign-ups is to offer something extraordinary.<\/p>\n<p>A free e-book, for example.<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest trends right now is to offer the e-book on LinkedIn in exchange for people writing their email in the comment section.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3158 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Skaermbillede-2016-06-27-kl.-16.26.37.png\" alt=\"Screenshot 2016-06-27 at 16.26.37\" width=\"553\" height=\"569\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">However, I don&#8217;t quite believe this model will last. LinkedIn may eventually restrict this practice<\/p>\n<p>For now, though, it&#8217;s quite effective, and Thomas has here gotten 1,700 emails via his post.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s relatively easy to create an e-book. It&#8217;s very impersonal.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, people prefer to receive an email from a person.<\/p>\n<p>When I send newsletters, the sender is &#8220;Micky Weis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re an individual or a company, using a real name makes your emails feel more trustworthy.<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for the email address! Most companies send from a no-reply email to avoid getting a lot of emails back &#8211; but what does that say about you or your company? Be service-minded and respond to the emails that should come!<\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Consider your audience and then test which &#8220;name&#8221; in the office works best. It&#8217;s about building trust. If you want to take it further, you can add a photo of the sender from the office in the email. I do this in my emails as well. Something we work a lot with at Helsebixen, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/filipevaldsen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Filip<\/a> is incredibly good at segmentation.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a closer look at how this works in practice.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s better than sending the same email to thousands of users, but it still segments your customers into broad categories.<\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>In practice &#8211; example 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">People buy a pair of jeans, so you recommend a shirt and then a tie. But here you assume that all customers who bought X are also interested in Y.
