in the Middle East: Adapting to rapid growth and unique opportunities in Dubai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whew, 15 years down the road \u2013 time flies.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s funny to think that I started by just playing around with a little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/what-is-seo\/\">SEO<\/a> back in the day.<\/p>\n<p>You never know how life will unfold, and I certainly didn\u2019t expect that the time spent in front of a Windows computer (now a Mac) would eventually take me to Dubai and the Middle East for work.<\/p>\n<p>That was quite a shift, both mentally and marketing-wise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In just 50 years, this city has gone from being a desert to a gigantic metropolis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, it\u2019s still a city growing at a rapid pace with loads of potential.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m keeping my positive hat on for this post and focusing on the marketing aspects, as bringing up this region can always be a bit of a balancing act.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I find it fascinating how the Middle East has developed, so I thought it was fitting to share a bit about my work in the region.<\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\">I was fortunate enough to work with Dubaipetfood over an extended period, which was a pleasure filled with great experiences. <strong>A big thank you to Anders and his team for those.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div id=\"ez-toc-container\" class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The UAE has become the world\u2019s workplace over time.<\/p>\n<p>Something special happens when cultures from all over the globe meet to create new connections, optimize processes, and foster growth.<\/p>\n<p>For many, the region feels like a revolving door. Expats and families frequently move in and out of the area for short and mid-term stays.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I discovered this firsthand<\/strong>; Not everyone keeps their word here, though I only had a few bad experiences and mostly good ones. Dubaipetfood was a fun and unique challenge for me.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Level_of_service\"><\/span>Level of service<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The rapid development of the region has pushed the boundaries of what\u2019s possible.<\/p>\n<p>What surprised me at first was how most e-commerce businesses have their own delivery vehicles \u2013 quite the opposite of what we see in Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 50 years, it has become the norm for everything to be delivered within a few hours. The next step in their development is the ongoing discussion about using drones for last-mile delivery.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2711\" title=\"70377661_2553269201407398_615262139690516480_n\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/70377661_2553269201407398_615262139690516480_n-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/70377661_2553269201407398_615262139690516480_n-1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/70377661_2553269201407398_615262139690516480_n-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/70377661_2553269201407398_615262139690516480_n-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many companies have managed to evolve along with the region\u2019s demands, which has created a highly competitive landscape.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be among the top in e-commerce, you have to keep up with this trend. You should expect fast-paced deals and be aware that customers could switch to a competitor at any time.<\/p>\n<p>Everything is possible if you have enough money. Because of this, the level of service always has to be top-notch.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"E-commerce_in_the_region\"><\/span>E-commerce in the region<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/u.ae\/en\/information-and-services\/business\/ecommerce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E-commerce is starting to flourish across the region<\/a> \u2013 many international companies are setting up offices, and massive amounts of investment are flowing in from around the world. According to several reports, people are particularly shopping on apps and mobile devices \u2013 something we\u2019re familiar with, but Dubai takes it to the next level.<\/p>\n<p>You can get <strong>anything<\/strong> via apps, whether it\u2019s specific services like hairdressers, rides, food, cleaning, etc. This has created a mentality in the Middle East where <strong>you can get anything within a couple of hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\">I found this out myself; You can have your car refueled, find a handyman, order food, a taxi, or someone to pick up your car. Anything you can think of can be done through apps.<\/div>\n<p>Reports show that up to 73% of total sales via online channels are made through national webshops. This is quite different from Denmark, where we love shopping from foreign shops. However, everything logistics-wise fits together in Dubai, and everything you need is right there in or around the major cities.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there\u2019s a tendency for people to shop mostly for electronics, clothing, and groceries through online channels. Overall, we\u2019re seeing an increase in e-commerce sales due to websites and apps that excel at fast delivery and offer multiple payment methods, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickpost.ai\/blog\/best-ecommerce-companies-in-uae-united-arab-emirates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making it easier for consumers to shop online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, the Middle East has massive potential to experience a boom in international e-commerce. The region is already prepared to make most of its purchases online.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_temporary_destination\"><\/span>A temporary destination<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Cities in the UAE, like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, have become home to expats from around the world \u2013 similar to what we see in other major cities.<\/p>\n<p>Here, you find cultures from all over the world, and these cities allow the international aspect to shine through.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re running a business in this area, be prepared for people to frequently move in and out of the region. This means you may have to adjust your target audience regularly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\">If you, for example, have an email list of customers, it\u2019s very likely that some of them have moved again.<\/div>\n<p>The Middle East\u2019s status as a temporary destination will have a direct impact on which target groups are relevant to your business, so it\u2019s important to be flexible in this regard.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Respect_the_culture\"><\/span>Respect the culture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While many of the Middle Eastern cities are quite international, with various nationalities working together, it\u2019s still important to remember that you\u2019re in a different country.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us are used to respecting cultural differences when traveling abroad, but in such an international environment, there will undoubtedly be situations where you unintentionally cross some cultural boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true in e-commerce and marketing. Some ad setups and images might make sense back home but could be inappropriate in the Middle East due to cultural differences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I recommend<\/strong> approaching the cultures of the Middle East with humility to succeed in this region.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Don\u2019t hesitate to ask your business partners or fellow expats about the cultural differences you should be aware of. Respect the rules of the area, and observe what others are doing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hard_to_find_people\"><\/span>Hard to find people<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In a region with rapid development and diverse industries, you\u2019d think there\u2019d be a straightforward structure for job seekers. Unfortunately, that\u2019s not the case yet.<\/p>\n<p>It can be challenging to find the right employees on your own. In my experience, there\u2019s a lot of turnover, not least because people can get offered ridiculously high salaries.<\/p>\n<p>Many companies use job agents to headhunt the right people, especially digital profiles.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Temperatures_and_holidays\"><\/span>Temperatures and holidays<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In addition to adjusting to new conditions for marketing, e-commerce, and cultural differences in the region, there are other practical aspects to consider when moving to the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>For one, the temperatures are drastically different from what we\u2019re used to.
