It consists of a few key elements that make it easier for both users and Google to identify and access a website.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s use the following example URL to explain its structure:<\/p>\n<p><strong>https:\/\/www.example.com\/url\/<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Protocol\"><\/span>Protocol<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The protocol is the first part of any URL.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, it\u2019s &#8220;https&#8221;, though you\u2019ve likely also seen &#8220;http&#8221; used on other websites.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the letters at the beginning, they indicate how the website&#8217;s content is fetched and which service is used to access it.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Subdomain\"><\/span>Subdomain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The subdomain can take various forms.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most common is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www\">www<\/a>.&#8221;, which you can see in the example above.<\/p>\n<p>Subdomains could also be &#8220;blog.&#8221;, &#8220;shop.&#8221;, &#8220;event.&#8221;\u2014or practically anything else.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of a subdomain is to act as a separate section of the site, often indexed separately by Google.<\/p>\n<p>Subdomains are great for organizing a site or managing different languages. For example, you might see &#8220;da.&#8221; or &#8220;es.&#8221; to represent different language versions.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Domain_name\"><\/span>Domain name<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Following the subdomain is the domain name.<\/p>\n<p>In our example, it&#8217;s &#8220;example&#8221;, which would be the name of the website.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TLD_ccTLD_or_top-level_domain\"><\/span>TLD, ccTLD, or top-level domain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Next is the top-level domain\u2014commonly known as TLD, or ccTLD if it\u2019s country-specific.<\/p>\n<p>This element indicates whether a site is using a generic or country-specific domain.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;.dk&#8221; for Denmark<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;.se&#8221; for Sweden<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;.com&#8221;, &#8220;.net&#8221;, or &#8220;.org&#8221; for general or organizational use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Page_path\"><\/span>Page path<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The final element in our example is the page path: &#8220;\/url\/&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This describes the specific subpage within the website being accessed.<\/p>\n<p>If a path includes multiple words, they are usually separated by hyphens (-), like this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>https:\/\/www.example.com\/email-marketing\/<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s a subpage of a subpage, the segments are separated by slashes (\/), which is often seen in online stores with category and product pages.<\/p>\n<p>There are certainly longer and more complex URLs than this, but for simplicity, we\u2019re focusing on the basics here.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_you_create_a_good_URL\"><\/span>Can you create a good URL?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yes, absolutely!<\/p>\n<p>A well-crafted URL contributes to a clear and user-friendly site structure, which benefits both your visitors and search engines like Google.<\/p>\n<p>A clear URL helps both users and Google understand what the page is about, improves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/sitemap\/\">indexing<\/a>, and increases the likelihood of ranking well in search results.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"URL_structure\"><\/span>URL structure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now we\u2019re getting into what&#8217;s known as URL structure\u2014how URLs are organized on a website.<\/p>\n<p>This structure is often based on selected paths that act as categories for the site&#8217;s subpages.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, if you publish blog posts on your site, you might use a path like \/blog\/, followed by the article title, such as:<\/p>\n<p>\/blog\/guide-to-facebook-marketing\/<\/p>\n<p>The path \/blog\/ now works as a category and can be reused for future blog posts.<\/p>\n<p>URL structuring is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/what-is-seo\/\">SEO<\/a> best practices. It helps improve your site\u2019s visibility and relevance to search engines.<\/p>\n<p>The more specific and concise your URLs are\u2014and the better structured your site is\u2014the higher your chances of ranking well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\">\n<p><strong>A few tips for creating effective URLs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid or replace special characters that don\u2019t work internationally. In Denmark these characters won&#8217;t work: &#8220;\u00e6&#8221;, &#8220;\u00f8&#8221;, &#8220;\u00e5&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Include relevant keywords that describe the page\u2019s content.<\/li>\n<li>Keep URLs short and to the point.
