You get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>These search terms show up repeatedly on Google. That\u2019s why it\u2019s crucial to integrate an online strategy into your overall plan for your local business. I\u2019ve said it many times: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/what-is-seo\/\">search engine optimization<\/a> matters \u2013 and there\u2019s a reason so many businesses invest heavily in reaching the top of Google\u2019s results.<\/p>\n<p>(You\u2019ve probably experienced it yourself. When you Google something, you don\u2019t scroll to the bottom or visit page two \u2013 you click the top results. THAT&#8217;S why we want your business up there!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Below you can see the big spenders on Adwords<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1781 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/googletopsearchadvertisers13-1-1024x768-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Google's Top Search Advertisers\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So what can you do with this data and knowledge?<\/p>\n<p>Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the competition, focus on what you <em>can<\/em> do. You don\u2019t need to be as big as Amazon \u2013 and that\u2019s probably unrealistic anyway \u2013 but you can <em>win locally<\/em>. That\u2019s when you need to get creative. Maybe you already have a unique advantage over your competitors, or maybe you can <em>create<\/em> one \u2013 like offering student discounts.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s revisit the previous example. Imagine my David\u2019s salon is located in central Aarhus. In that case, he probably has competitors already working with local SEO. So instead, we focused on different elements such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Affordable hairdresser Aarhus C \u2013 Free coffee included<\/li>\n<li>Student-friendly salon in Aarhus C \u2013 15% off with student ID<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We changed the focus from simply targeting \u201cAarhus\u201d to highlighting price and offers.<\/p>\n<p>Remember: you only need to fight the battles within <em>your<\/em> world. The whole world isn\u2019t your competition.<\/p>\n<p>If your website runs on WordPress, you can easily install the<a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/\"> Yoast SEO plugin<\/a>. It allows you to edit your SEO titles and meta descriptions at the bottom of each post or page.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s simple \u2013 especially with Yoast, which guides you through the process. Meta description is what appears below your link in Google, and the title tag is the main clickable link.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Networking_and_collaboration\"><\/span>Networking and collaboration<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To reach the top of Google, you need quality links from other websites. Links on the internet function like recommendations, and they should appear naturally. Otherwise, Google might think you\u2019re trying to manipulate its algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t aim for a bunch of foreign or low-quality links \u2013 we\u2019re talking about <em>quality<\/em>, remember that.<\/p>\n<p>Local marketing is all about leveraging your local presence. Being local gives you certain advantages. You likely already have a network in your community \u2013 or at least the opportunity to build one. Through that network, you can collaborate with other businesses or sponsor events to strengthen your public presence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sponsor local sports clubs<\/li>\n<li>Sponsor local events like races or community festivals<\/li>\n<li>Co-host giveaways with nearby businesses<\/li>\n<li>Offer discounts to employees from other local companies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are all part of a branding strategy. And if you\u2019re smart, you\u2019ll include a link to your website whenever you do any of the above. It\u2019s a simple strategy that often works well for local businesses because it\u2019s easier to make strong connections in a local setting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Another advantage of having a solid local network is that you can showcase local media and company logos as references on your website. For example: \u201cFeatured in Jyllandsposten.\u201d You\u2019re borrowing the strength of other brands to lift your own.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_publicity\"><\/span><strong>Get publicity <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Another way to optimize your business is through publicity. It can be hard to get, but there are still opportunities locally. We\u2019re not talking about major national news channels \u2013 but small, local media.<\/p>\n<p>If you want local press coverage, try these tricks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Co-create a product with the local brewery (if there is one)<\/li>\n<li>Sell something extraordinary (Aarhus\u2019 biggest pizza or Aarhus\u2019 only authentic Italian pizza)<\/li>\n<li>Make an amazing product and get it to go viral<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Create_outstanding_content\"><\/span>Create outstanding content<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you want to succeed locally, you need to create high-quality content or offer a truly unique product. We touched on this in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/start-a-blog\/\"> previous blog post<\/a> about marketing. When you\u2019re local, your name and reputation are on the line \u2013 especially if you sell a service or run a restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Bendtsen, one of Denmark\u2019s top trainers, came to me a few years ago wanting to boost his visibility online.<\/p>\n<p>We quickly set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/guide-wordpress\/\">WordPress<\/a> template and launched it. Then we started working on content and social media. (He\u2019s launching an even better site soon \u2013 check it out!)<\/p>\n<p>Because Peter consistently creates strong content across his channels, he earns a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/linkbuilding-2025\/\">backlinks<\/a>. He also guest blogs on other sites, which builds both links and awareness. He\u2019s built a successful business in record time \u2013 in a very competitive field. Impressive!<\/p>\n<p>Google has played a huge role in Peter\u2019s success. Thanks to the strategy mentioned above, he currently ranks second for \u201cpersonal training\u201d \u2013 and with his new site launching at the end of 2016, I\u2019m confident he\u2019ll climb even higher.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Google_Places_also_known_as_Google_My_Business\"><\/span>2. Google Places, also known as Google My Business<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you run a local business, one of the most important things \u2013 possibly <em>the<\/em> most important \u2013 is being findable. If people can\u2019t find you, they won\u2019t visit you. That\u2019s why working with maps is essential.<\/p>\n<p>Mapping simply means helping people find their way \u2013 whether it\u2019s through a map on your site, Google Places, Tripadvisor, or Facebook. You need to be visible everywhere so people can find you no matter what platform they use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Google Places example<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1766 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Skaermbillede-2015-08-21-kl.-23.33.08.png\" alt=\"Google My Business Eksempel\" width=\"948\" height=\"774\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Previously, you could verify your location through a Google+ account, but since <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/plus\/answer\/9217723\">Google+ has been discontinued<\/a>, you now add your address and verify it by mail. You\u2019ll receive a PIN code, which you then enter in your account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Ask a few friends to leave a Google review for your business. That way, you\u2019ll get five stars \u2013 and reviews work! We\u2019re influenced by what others think because we fear missing out. This makes reviews a simple but effective investment.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Facebook_markedsforing\"><\/span>3. Facebook markedsf\u00f8ring<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>All local businesses seem to think they need a Facebook page\u2014and I completely agree. Facebook is often the best place to start for many businesses. However, if not handled properly, it can also lead to stagnation or even failure. Many businesses give up on Facebook before they\u2019ve even really started.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Creating_a_Facebook_page\"><\/span><strong>Creating a Facebook page<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When creating your page, choose the \u201clocal business\u201d category. This allows you to add your address so users can check in and leave reviews. This also helps improve visibility on Google.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get more check-ins and reviews<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Offer customers a small treat for checking in\u2014chocolate, a discount, a gift card, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Free shot for checking in at your nightclub<\/li>\n<li>Promote the check-in option on your website<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Never let your page go inactive. A stale page makes your business look closed. Schedule regular posts to keep your page fresh and engaging.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advertising\"><\/span><strong>Advertising<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ll need a Facebook page to run ads, so make sure it\u2019s set up first.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/facebook-ads\/\">Facebook ads<\/a> are a great low-cost marketing tool. You can start with as little as 20 DKK per day, which helps you test quickly if it works.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t take a shotgun approach\u2014let\u2019s look at how to structure your ads properly.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Target_audiences\"><\/span><strong>Target audiences<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are several ways to structure campaigns, and while we won&#8217;t dive into the full platform, here\u2019s an overview.<\/p>\n<p>Start by choosing your campaign objective\u2014I often select \u201cclicks to website\u201d to drive more traffic. If your page is brand new, aim to get 2,000\u20133,000 fans to build momentum when posting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For a local business, consider these target audiences:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Audience 1:<\/strong> Page fans (if you have them)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audience 2:<\/strong> Website visitors (using retargeting)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Local area:<\/strong> This takes more work. Use demographics like age, gender, and job. For example, if you&#8217;re a hairdresser in Risskov, target residents there and mention that locality in your ad copy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Competitors:<\/strong> This is only recommended if customers often switch between brands. If loyalty is high, this tactic may be less effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Minimal_budget\"><\/span><strong>Minimal budget<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One of the advantages of Facebook is how effective it can be on a small budget. Unlike expensive newspaper ads, you can test campaigns cheaply.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I recommend running campaigns for at least 2\u20133 weeks to gather meaningful data. Your target audience is narrow, but that\u2019s actually a good thing.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Create_attractive_content\"><\/span>4. <strong>Create attractive content<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s obvious\u2014but creating great content (aka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/content-marketing-strategy\/\">content marketing<\/a>) is crucial. Offering a unique experience or valuable content will get people talking.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be the next NOMA. Even a small local effort can yield strong returns if the content speaks to your community.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t bring in more customers if you don\u2019t have great content to keep them. Retention applies locally too\u2014it\u2019s easier to keep a customer than to gain a new one.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nightclub_example\"><\/span><strong>Nightclub example<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Nightclubs are heavily weekend-dependent (unless you&#8217;re on Manhattan). Here&#8217;s how to make your content work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow up the weekend with a post featuring top 10 pictures from Friday or Saturday. Make them easy to share. Post on Monday and again on Friday alongside a promo.<\/li>\n<li>No website? Use Facebook photo albums for each weekend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"greybox\">\n<p><strong>Other nightclub tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Menu:<\/strong> Avoid using PDFs. Display your menu visually and directly on the site. Let people \u201ctaste\u201d with their eyes. This applies to any business.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Events:<\/strong> Keep your website updated\u2014don\u2019t let old events linger. If you can\u2019t maintain a website, use social media as your main platform.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Table reservations:<\/strong> Make it easy to book tables online. Avoid double bookings, and consider keeping a VIP email list for top guests.
