But this week we\u2019re moving into a different category, which is a bit healthier, so to speak. We\u2019re going to take a closer look at how to run a local bike shop. This is an interesting case because there is so much competition from online stores.<\/p>\n<p>Again: remember, my methods or thoughts are not a fixed or definitive approach. These are just ideas, tips, and tricks for what one could do. Yes, I know. That\u2019s not news to anyone&#8230; Yet many physical stores actually forget this fact, which unfortunately can have serious consequences for the survival of small, local shops!<\/p>\n<p>So make sure to have a website \u2014 you don\u2019t need an online shop, but have a website regardless!<\/p>\n<p>A common mistake I often see with bike shops is that their website still looks outdated. It simply looks like something from 5 to 10 years ago, and we have moved on since then.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s relatively cheap and much easier to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/start-ecommerce-business\/\">create a website<\/a> today compared to back then. Just choose a simple brand page with an associated blog.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_Ads\"><\/span>Google Ads<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Don\u2019t compete on expensive, highly competitive keywords such as \u201cbikes online.\u201d Instead, think<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/local-marketing\/\"> local advertising.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you do this, you get found by users who are in your local area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example keywords:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bikes [your city]<\/li>\n<li>Bike repair<\/li>\n<li>Bike helmet<\/li>\n<li>New bike lock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You get my point. Find out which areas you want to focus on.<\/p>\n<p>You could start by jumping on Google now and see what comes up when you Google industry keywords.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_My_Business\"><\/span>Google My Business<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As I wrote in the post about how I would market a bakery, it\u2019s crucial to manage your Google My Business account. This is where users first see reviews and photos of your store.<\/p>\n<p>Also, remember to update your opening hours on Google, Facebook, and so on. There is nothing worse than going directly to a store only to find it closed because the hours are not updated. That\u2019s frustrating.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Content_marketing\"><\/span>Content marketing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>People don\u2019t buy a new bike every day \u2014 and once they\u2019ve bought one, it\u2019s a long time before they buy a new one.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, you need to be \u201ctop of mind\u201d and think long term when developing your strategy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create guides on your website like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to prevent your bike from being stolen<\/li>\n<li>How to prepare your bike for winter<\/li>\n<li>How to choose the right kids\u2019 bike<\/li>\n<li>Should you choose an electric bike?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You see the point: it\u2019s about building trust and personality when you have a physical location.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you\u2019re thinking: \u201cBut Micky, I\u2019m bad at writing.\u201d Then make videos. Record a few videos of yourself talking. My good friends at a butcher shop in Aarhus have embraced this.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Facebook_and_Instagram\"><\/span>Facebook and Instagram<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve created this great content I mentioned, make sure to promote it on the right channels. That means creating target groups that match the people who visit your store and live nearby.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kids<\/li>\n<li>Teenagers<\/li>\n<li>Adults (18-35)<\/li>\n<li>Adults (35-50)<\/li>\n<li>Adults (50+)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you market relevant blog posts to these groups, you will definitely get a lot of traffic to your website or views on your videos.<\/p>\n<p>From here, you can create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/retargeting\/\">remarketing<\/a> campaigns. For example, people who read your article about getting ready for winter could get ads for winter gear like new lights.<\/p>\n<p>Also, kids are a great source for increasing in-store sales \u2014 maybe you could bring in a limited edition Fortnite bike that could go viral on social media? Think outside the box!<\/p>\n<p>It might also be worth showing your employees on social media so people see the skilled people behind the business. Nothing is more trustworthy than a great workplace where you put faces to the team!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Personal_marketing\"><\/span>Personal marketing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Take it to the next level and create personal marketing.<\/p>\n<p>You can use email or SMS to build a customer database, and if you\u2019re smart, you\u2019ll get permission to send material here.<\/p>\n<p>You might know that a bike user should have their brakes checked every three years. You can send customers a reminder email when it\u2019s time. That\u2019s smart! It\u2019s like how dentists send reminders for appointments \u2014 super clever.<\/p>\n<p>Personal marketing is a perfect way to keep your customers loyal so they don\u2019t drift away in the digital space and choose another dealer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSign up for our bike updates and Bjarne (employee) will make sure you\u2019re always up to date and can keep your bike in top shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Which industry should I cover next time?
