Accept that things change<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-11\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/10-small-philosophies\/#Extra_tip_11_Personal_finances\" >Extra tip #11: Personal finances<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Be_grateful\"><\/span>1. <strong>Be grateful<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Man, how much I can complain (excuse my language). I\u2019ve caught myself doing it \u2014 and I want to change that. So I try every day to be grateful for the small things in my life.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that nowadays \u2014 especially because of social media (no, I don\u2019t hate it) \u2014 you can feel like everyone else\u2019s life is better \u2014 but it\u2019s not! It\u2019s just that we almost always only share the positive things and not the negative. I see Instagram profiles daily filled with cafe visits, travels, and who knows what else, but remember: the grass is always greener on the other side&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>You can always be jealous \u2014 there will always be someone prettier or smarter than you (depending on what parameters you compare yourself on). We are world champions at finding flaws in ourselves, and it hasn\u2019t gotten any better since social media arrived.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cWe are born original and die copies\u201d \u2014 S\u00f8ren Kierkegaard<\/p>\n<div class=\"greybox\">\n<p><strong>Challenge<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring the next week, mention at least one thing each day you are grateful for. It can be family, friends, your partner, work, exercise, the ability to do something, or just being alive \u2014 you name it!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Calculate_what_you_will_pay_at_checkout\"><\/span>2. C<strong>alculate what you will pay at checkout<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This may sound basic and a little silly \u2014 I know!<\/p>\n<p>I read about this dad from the US who asked his kids to figure out what they would pay at the checkout when shopping. What a brilliant way to teach math! Much more tangible \u2014 at least for me. Honestly, I never understood much when our math teacher at business school lectured about calculus and \u201call that stuff\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenge<\/strong><br \/>\nNext time you go shopping, try to guess what the total amount will be. At first, I struggled to remember prices, but now I only miss by a few kroner. Don\u2019t write it down \u2014 that would be cheating \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Drink_water\"><\/span>3. Drink water<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s crazy how few of us drink enough water during the day. It\u2019s so important to stay hydrated for our bodies to function optimally \u2014 and if you don\u2019t drink enough water, you actually get hungry faster. A 2% drop in hydration reduces productivity by 20-30%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenge<\/strong><br \/>\nPut a yellow sticker on your screen, set a reminder in your calendar, or add a top note on your to-do list every day saying \u201cRemember to drink water.\u201d Fill a jug with water each day and keep it at your workspace.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Do_one_thing_daily_that_makes_you_uncomfortable\"><\/span>4. D<strong>o one thing daily that makes you uncomfortable<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Man, there are so many things I hate \u2014 but fewer than a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>It can be calling a bank advisor (especially back when I was younger and had overdrafts after a wild night out).<\/p>\n<p>It can be admitting mistakes to family, friends, or your partner.<\/p>\n<p>It can be cooking if you don\u2019t like it (definitely one of my weak spots).<\/p>\n<p>It can be going for a run or hitting the gym.<\/p>\n<p>We all have some kind of anxiety \u2014 for some it\u2019s worse than for others. For some, being in a crowded shopping mall can be a battle \u2014 and that battle is one you need to take, for your own sake.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Cold_shower\"><\/span>5. Cold shower<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>No, you don\u2019t have to take a cold shower every day. But it\u2019s proven that cold showers can help the body relax more and make us less stressed \u2014 there are actually many benefits. If you are a winter swimmer \u2014 thumbs up! I haven\u2019t gotten there myself yet!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenge<\/strong><br \/>\nEnd your shower by alternating between warm and cold water for about 20 seconds.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Dress_comfortably\"><\/span>6. D<strong>ress comfortably<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I don\u2019t buy into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/facebook\/11217273\/Facebooks-Mark-Zuckerberg-Why-I-wear-the-same-T-shirt-every-day.html\">Mark Zuckerberg same-clothes-everyday thing.<\/a> Maybe it\u2019s easier when you\u2019re a billionaire.<\/p>\n<p>You shouldn\u2019t live beyond your means, but ASOS and many other cheap websites have made it possible to always feel well dressed for little money.<\/p>\n<p>Feeling well dressed improves your expression and attitude. What well dressed means is totally up to you \u2014 it\u2019s about you feeling comfortable.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Give_honest_compliments\"><\/span>7. G<strong>ive honest compliments<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s crazy how bad we humans are at praising each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenge<\/strong><br \/>\nGive one honest compliment a day for the next 30 days \u2014 it can be to a colleague doing a good job, a friend who just dyed their hair \u2014 the little things count.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Fuck_yes\"><\/span>8. Fuck yes!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When I meet new people, I\u2019m very open minded \u2014 there\u2019s room for everyone, no matter where they come from.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do I want to spend a lot of time with them?<\/strong><br \/>\nThat\u2019s another matter. I have a principle \u2014 I want to be with people I think \u201cFuck yes\u201d about, not \u201cIf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fuck yes:<\/strong> people who I feel truly wish me the best, and whom I also wish the best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If \/ maybe:<\/strong> people I\u2019m not sure where I stand with. People I don\u2019t fully trust, or who seem not to be 100% interested in me. Life is too short.<\/p>\n<p>I used to be way too good at pleasing everyone \u2014 luckily that has improved.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_What_do_you_use_the_golden_hours_for\"><\/span>9. W<strong>hat do you use the golden hours for?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many people see their day as 8 to 4 or 9 to 5 \u2014 but there are actually many hours outside these fixed work hours in Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>I call these the golden hours \u2014 that\u2019s when you can shape your future.<\/p>\n<p>When do you get up? Do you get up just before the bus leaves, or early enough to avoid traffic on the drive?<\/p>\n<p>Do you watch reality TV like Paradise Hotel when you get home from work?<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m not saying there is right or wrong<\/strong> \u2014 it\u2019s about action and consequence.<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re aware of what you get out of your actions and you\u2019re happy with that, then keep it up.<\/p>\n<p>For me, the problem is when people get jealous of those who work a lot.<\/p>\n<p>It might be a clich\u00e9, but if you want something you haven\u2019t had before, you have to do something you haven\u2019t done before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenge<\/strong><br \/>\nSkip TV for the next month and read at least 10 pages in a book or your favorite blog. Or use that time for a run \u2014 think about how a small change can make a huge difference for you, unless watching Paradise Hotel is really important to you \u2014 then keep watching.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Accept_that_things_change\"><\/span>10. Accept <strong>that things change<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In many religions, acceptance of the world\u2019s constant change is one of the most important foundations.<\/p>\n<p>The problem arises when we either refuse to change ourselves or consciously choose not to accept that the world around us changes.<\/p>\n<p>This can happen when we get older but continue living like young people without taking responsibility. The same applies in business. If you\u2019re open to change, the chance of it surprising you is much smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Change is actually one of life\u2019s joys. It\u2019s what separates us from animals \u2014 we don\u2019t just wake up and wait to be eaten or to eat. We can change behavior, location, and habits \u2014 if we want to.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Extra_tip_11_Personal_finances\"><\/span>Extra tip #11: P<strong>ersonal finances<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One extra tip \u2014 I know personal finance is a sensitive topic. When I was younger, I was bad at managing income and expenses. Then I read some books on finance that gave me ideas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenge<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat I do now is pull a list every month of all movements on my bank account \u2014 I then categorize them (fixed expenses, dining out, grocery budget, etc.) \u2014 banks have functions in their online banking that can do this for you. I like doing it in Excel. That way I know if I\u2019m living beyond my means or not, instead of guessing.<\/p>\n<p>As I said, I am neither a psychologist, coach, nor personal advisor \u2014 I wrote this post because things have sometimes gone off course for me, and maybe some of these things can help you.
