I dove into heavy psychology books and the thickest autobiographies I could find.<\/p>\n<p>I gave up\u2014every time. But then I changed my strategy.<\/p>\n<p>I started reading things that genuinely interested me.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Steve Jobs\u2019 autobiography, David Beckham\u2019s books, or short and accessible books about online marketing.<\/p>\n<p>As I read more and more simple books, I also developed my reading skills. Eventually, I was able to take on more demanding genres again.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I read exclusively in English, and some of the material is pretty heavy\u2014like machine learning and psychology. And I can only get through these topics because I started easy\u2014and because they also interest me, of course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5 things reading has given me:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Better understanding of others and myself<\/li>\n<li>Improved memory (clinically proven)<\/li>\n<li>Cultural awareness<\/li>\n<li>More knowledge (obviously)<\/li>\n<li>Greater peace of mind and better sleep (reading calms you down)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The time you spend on social media equals the time it would take to read 200 books a year\u2014crazy, right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule #1: Start easy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Technology\"><\/span>Technology<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most of us are completely absorbed by technology\u2014for better and worse, like so many other things in life.<\/p>\n<p>I probably work more with tech on a daily basis than most people.<\/p>\n<p>For a long time, I let technology control me until I recognized the issue and changed my strategy.<\/p>\n<p>I became more aware of how I spent the hours in my day.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Give_yourself_an_exercise\"><\/span>G<strong>ive yourself an exercise<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Install a time-tracking software on your computer\u2014I use the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.getharvest.com\/\"> Harvest app<\/a> myself.<\/p>\n<p>Start the timer every time you begin a task, and try it out for a week.<\/p>\n<p>Trust me\u2014you\u2019ll be shocked at how little you actually work and how much time is spent on social media or other nonsense (if I may say so).<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t always do it\u2014I\u2019m not that structured\u2014but from time to time I do it for a week to evaluate how I\u2019m spending my time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule #2: You control the tech, not the other way around.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_to-do_apps\"><\/span><strong>Use to-do apps<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One thing that radically improved my productivity is the <a href=\"https:\/\/to-do.office.com\/tasks\/\">Wunderlist app (today known as Microsoft To Do).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of those smart little apps where you can create tasks and lists of all kinds.<\/p>\n<p>I use it for EVERYTHING\u2014really, everything.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve completed around 5,000 tasks using that little gem\u2014and it\u2019s even free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I keep different lists\u2014here are a few of mine:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal: Things I need to remember personally<\/li>\n<li>Daily work: Current tasks<\/li>\n<li>Books: Books I want to read<\/li>\n<li>Blog optimization: Things to fix on the blog<\/li>\n<li>Blog posts: Upcoming posts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The great thing about Wunderlist is that it works across devices and syncs automatically if desired.<\/p>\n<p>When I get an idea on the bus, I jot it down\u2014and the same goes if an idea hits before I fall asleep.<\/p>\n<p>We use Trello at Firtal, so I move tasks from Trello to my \u201cdaily work\u201d list on Wunderlist. It makes me extremely productive because I don\u2019t plan my day <em>on<\/em> the day\u2014but the day before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule #3: Get things out of your head and into an app (or on paper).<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EQ\"><\/span>EQ<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Emotional Intelligence (your EQ) is a concept I only encountered in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>I met my current mentor two years ago\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/morten-kirk-6209a32\/\">Morten Kirk<\/a>, founder of SERMO with over 500 employees.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that when hiring, they value EQ more than IQ.<\/p>\n<p>That inspired me to explore the topic.<\/p>\n<p>Ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How emotionally stable are you? Do you manage your emotions well?<\/li>\n<li>Can you read others&#8217; emotions and act accordingly?<\/li>\n<li>Can you control your emotions to focus on a task?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You have a boss who\u2019s emotionally unstable\u2014grumpy one day, happy the next. He doesn\u2019t notice when you&#8217;re overwhelmed and just keeps piling on tasks. In this case, IQ doesn\u2019t matter\u2014his lack of EQ is breaking you and the team.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tom_Brady\"><\/span>Tom Brady:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After the Super Bowl, I read statements from Tom Brady\u2019s teammates.<\/p>\n<p>Even under insane pressure and trailing far behind in the final (the most-watched sports event in the world), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/a-lesson-in-mental-toughness-from-tom-brady-and-the_us_5898983ee4b02bbb1816bcd0\">Tom Brady remained completely calm.<\/a> You couldn\u2019t tell from his demeanor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule #4: Master your emotions and pay attention to others&#8217;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"People\"><\/span>People<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The most important thing for us as humans is to have other people around us.<\/p>\n<p>But it can also be a challenge\u2014especially if you\u2019re not selective.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There\u2019s a saying: You become like the five people you spend the most time with.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I focus a lot on whether the people around me bring value to my life\u2014positively or negatively.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t have to be intentional, but if you have five close friends who party every weekend and don&#8217;t really accomplish much\u2014chances are, you&#8217;ll follow suit (note: what&#8217;s good or bad is subjective\u2014I\u2019m not judging here).<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying you should choose your friends based on skills or status\u2014but be mindful of what they bring into your life.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_a_mentor_a_strong_network\"><\/span><strong>Get a mentor &amp; a strong network<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The best thing you can do for yourself is to get a mentor and build a strong network.<\/p>\n<p>It can take many forms.<\/p>\n<p>I have a great mentor in Morten\u2014as mentioned earlier. I&#8217;ve also been lucky to have mentors in various industries\u2014from law and fitness to app development and real estate.<\/p>\n<p>It takes many cups of coffee to build a strong network, but it&#8217;s worth both the time and the coffee!<\/p>\n<div class=\"greybox\">\n<p><strong>How to build a great network:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respect people\u2019s time and skills<\/li>\n<li>People are different\u2014you won\u2019t find a mentor who knows everything<\/li>\n<li>Be clear on what you can offer\u2014and give it<\/li>\n<li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mickyweis\/\">LinkedIn<\/a> actively<\/li>\n<li>Give without expecting anything in return<\/li>\n<li>LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN\u2014a challenge for many<\/li>\n<li>Be curious and seek knowledge in books, podcasts, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your wits about you\u2014bad mentors exist, trust me<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Rule #5: Surround yourself with amazing people who add value to your life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diet_exercise_sleep_and_supplements\"><\/span><strong>Diet, exercise, sleep and supplements<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One thing too many people underestimate is their physical health.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve always been very active and played a lot of sports. But since I now sit for 8\u20139 hours a day working, it&#8217;s important for me to think about my diet and overall health.<\/p>\n<p>I try to avoid carbs, because they make me personally tired (we&#8217;re all different).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all about balance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s what works for me:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breakfast: Eggs, coffee and water<\/li>\n<li>Lunch: Meat and vegetables<\/li>\n<li>Dinner: Meat and vegetables<\/li>\n<li>Snacks: Dark chocolate, cottage cheese and rice cakes<\/li>\n<li>I also drink about 2\u20133 liters of water per day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From time to time I do enjoy pizza and other treats\u2014again: balance.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about creating habits. I believe that once something becomes a routine, it naturally becomes part of your lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>I also take supplements\u2014but I\u2019m fully aware they\u2019re not what makes the difference.<\/p>\n<p>I stick to the basics: Vitamin D, fish oil, magnesium and probiotics.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The tech industry, which I\u2019m part of, often ignores the importance of health\u2014it\u2019s almost expected to be careless if you\u2019re a \u201cnerd.\u201d I think that\u2019s a shame.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stress\"><\/span>Stress<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Stress has become an odd factor in today\u2019s society\u2014as if having stress is a badge of success. The more we work, the more successful we must be.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve read <em>Re:Work<\/em> by David Heinemeier, you\u2019ll know that this mindset is being challenged.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about working effectively\u2014especially on things that actually create value. I always remind my team to focus on what truly delivers value.<\/p>\n<p>I dare say: If you focus on your health, fitness, and life outside work, stress won\u2019t be able to catch you.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Exercise\"><\/span><strong>Exercise<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Many people claim they don\u2019t have time for fitness when they\u2019re self-employed or work a lot\u2014that\u2019s nonsense. It\u2019s about priorities.<\/p>\n<p>There are more workout options than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>Just like with books\u2014<strong>start easy!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After six months of persuasion, I got my mom to join a gym years ago. Eventually, I convinced her to try group training\u2014Kettlebell, I think. After a few weeks, she started going by herself. Two years later, she ran a half marathon and is now a regular at Fitness World.<\/p>\n<p>She even lost 15 kg and looks better today than she did 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule #6: Take care of your body\u2014it\u2019s the only place you\u2019ll ever live.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pleaser_or_helper\"><\/span><strong>Pleaser or helper?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I grew up mostly surrounded by women\u2014my mother and my two sisters\u2014and I\u2019ve always felt very protective of them.<\/p>\n<p>Because of that, I\u2019ve naturally become something of a pleaser towards others. I didn\u2019t fully realize this until I read the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/No-More-Mr-Nice-Guy\/dp\/0762415339\"><em>No More Mr. Nice Guy<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a funny title, but it truly changed how I saw helping others.<\/p>\n<p>When you help others, you often set your own needs aside. If you have the pleaser gene, this feels completely natural because you believe happiness comes from making other people happy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But I learned this the hard way<\/strong>: people won\u2019t say \u201cno\u201d on your behalf.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, I realized I was helping over 20 companies\u2014mostly for free\u2014because they were friends or acquaintances, and I felt it was my duty. They were making money, and I was more stressed than ever before.<\/p>\n<p><center><strong>That taught me to always ask myself the following question:<\/strong><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>There is a simple quiz you can give yourself before saying \u201cyes\u201d to anyone in your life: Does this move my life ahead and help me reach my goals, or is this a distraction that will keep me away from my mission?<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"greenbox\">\n<p><strong>Rule no. 7: Prioritizing yourself doesn\u2019t make you a bad person<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Your_vision\"><\/span>Why? Your vision<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One of the hardest things in my early twenties was people asking, <em>\u201cWhat\u2019s your passion, Micky?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>How the hell was I supposed to know? Excuse my language.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, I\u2019ve absorbed every book and TED Talk I could find on the subject.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My conclusion:<\/strong> you don\u2019t know your passion until you\u2019ve tried a thousand things\u2014and NOTHING is fun 100% of the time. Even models and athletes get tired of their lives from time to time. Accept this, and you\u2019ll go far.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you thinking, <em>\u201cI have no passion\u201d<\/em>, remember this: it takes 10,000 hours to get good at anything.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only now, at the age of 28, that I\u2019ve found my place\u2014so don\u2019t stress. Test yourself in every possible area, and remember: it only becomes <em>really<\/em> fun once you\u2019re good at something.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Money_is_the_worst_motivator\"><\/span><strong>Money is the worst motivator<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s funny &#8211; when you\u2019re young, you believe money is the best motivator because you don\u2019t yet have other drivers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/mihaly_csikszentmihalyi_on_flow?language=da\">But all studies show the opposite.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, some people only care about the financial aspect.<\/p>\n<p>But I promise you, that won\u2019t make you happy. I\u2019m not rich, but I\u2019m happy\u2014because today, I have a passion and I\u2019ve found my place.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you own too many things, the things own you.<br \/>\nPossession is suffering. \u2013 Christian Stadil<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><center><strong>The link between income and happiness<\/strong><\/center><center>As clearly shown, increased income doesn\u2019t significantly increase happiness once your basic needs are met.<\/center><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4037\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/GDP-AND-HAPPINESS-USA-1030x799-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"760\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"greenbox\">\n<p><strong>Rule no. 8: Test yourself, be brave, and forget money as a motivator.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Meditation_and_alone_time\"><\/span>Meditation and alone time<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Search interest in meditation has exploded in recent years\u2014likely due to our constant sense of being connected through technology.<\/p>\n<p>We lack presence more than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>To me, meditation isn\u2019t a Zen-like discipline only for monks in monasteries.<\/p>\n<p>I was first introduced to it through books\u2014Steve Jobs, for instance, practiced it. I then searched YouTube for different sessions and started experimenting myself.<\/p>\n<p>Later, my doctor told me it\u2019s the best medicine for stress\u2014which made me take it even more seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I primarily use breathing exercises to find calm in stressful periods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen I\u2019m stressed, I imagine a kind of pillar running through the center of my body. It\u2019s my balance point. As I breathe calmly, I try to center myself in that unshakable pillar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exercise:<\/strong><br \/>\nSit in a chair and inhale slowly through your nose while counting to 4 in your head. Hold your breath for 4 seconds. Exhale through your mouth for 4 seconds. Repeat 10\u201315 times while focusing only on your breath. In the beginning, you might find it difficult to breathe deeply into your stomach\u2014it will come!<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alone_time\"><\/span>A<strong>lone time<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To truly know yourself, you have to be willing to be alone.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, you\u2019ll blend into family, spouse, girlfriend or friends. It\u2019s about daring to be alone\u2014even without your social media.<\/p>\n<p>Go for a walk in the woods\u2014alone. Sleep alone or watch movies alone. In today\u2019s world, we\u2019re never really alone\u2014but I personally want to improve on this, so I actively schedule time for it.<\/p>\n<p>As I write this post, I\u2019m sitting alone in a caf\u00e9\u2014it\u2019s nice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule no. 9: Use breath and alone time to find calm and enjoy yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Focus_and_challenges\"><\/span><strong>Focus and challenges<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is definitely the hardest part for me.<\/p>\n<p>I have a monkey mind!<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably experienced that special state of flow.<\/p>\n<p>Often, these intense moments occur when we\u2019re only focused on <em>one<\/em> thing at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Where the focus goes, the energy flows<\/p>\n<p>It comes down to time management, your vision, and whether or not you\u2019re a pleaser.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show it takes around 15\u201330 minutes to fully enter and exit a task.<\/p>\n<p>We humans can only truly listen to one person at a time\u2014otherwise, our minds start to drift.<\/p>\n<div class=\"greybox\">\n<p><strong>Exercise:<\/strong><br \/>\nDo one thing at a time\u2014and finish it!<br \/>\nThere\u2019s a concept called \u201cEat the frog,\u201d which means starting your day with your hardest task.<\/p>\n<p>Even if it takes half the day, it\u2019s worth it\u2014otherwise you\u2019ll spend the whole day thinking about it while doing a bunch of less important tasks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Challenges\"><\/span><strong>Challenges<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>So is it all smooth sailing, Micky? No, and it never will be.<\/p>\n<p>The challenges we face in life are what shape us\u2014they form us and make us stronger.<\/p>\n<p>When we train to get better at a sport, we must apply the same principle to every other area of life.<\/p>\n<p>Want to be a better partner? Train it!<br \/>\nWant to become better at reading? Train it!<\/p>\n<p>We live in a time when technology and software have made it possible to learn languages just by going online. We can travel more affordably than ever before\u2014but we are capable of nothing if we don\u2019t train.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule no. 10: Focus on one thing at a time and use challenges as fuel for your development<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m back again!
