A feature many advertisers have been looking forward to, especially in the fashion world.<\/p>\n<p>For many years, Google and Amazon have dominated when it comes to product-related search and purchasing behavior.<\/p>\n<p>But now it seems Instagram may join the race, as more and more studies show that we\u2019re highly influenced to buy products through this powerful platform owned by Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a screenshot from Frederik IX, a brand I work with.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is how it looks in practice: we\u2019ve tagged the products directly on the model in the photo. This eliminates the countless comments we used to get asking for product names, details, or where they can be bought. Users had to ask in the comments where to buy items, which required a lot of effort from brands. That often killed the conversation and sent users to Google instead.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, this new feature allows businesses to send users directly to the specific products shown in the photos.<\/p>\n<p>Instagram is currently thriving. Whether it&#8217;s due to Facebook\u2019s bad press regarding data breaches, or <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/radical-product\/what-we-can-learn-from-the-snapchats-failed-redesign-edbe80cea568\">SnapChat\u2019s failed redesign<\/a>, is hard to say\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/sproutsocial.com\/insights\/instagram-stats\/\">but the numbers speak for themselves.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5858 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Skaermbillede-2018-08-10-kl.-18.42.20-300x105-1.png\" alt=\"Kevin Weil Twitter \" width=\"300\" height=\"105\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_get_started\"><\/span><strong>How to get started<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So far, Instagram Shopping is only available in selected countries and exclusively for webshops selling physical products that can be tagged. This means it\u2019s not available for hotels, services, or similar offerings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things to be aware of:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your Instagram app must be updated<\/li>\n<li>You need a business profile on Instagram<\/li>\n<li>Your Instagram and Facebook pages must be connected via Business Manager<\/li>\n<li>Your Facebook page must not have country or age restrictions<\/li>\n<li>You need to link your webshop to a product catalog on your Facebook page\u2014preferably via Facebook Business Manager<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Instagram advertising runs through Facebook\u2019s ad platform, \u201cAd Manager.\u201d However, at this point, you cannot tag products in ads. It\u2019s important to clarify that both Facebook and Instagram are integrated via the same platform, as both are owned by Mark Zuckerberg.<\/p>\n<p>Once it\u2019s working, you\u2019ll see the tagging option when uploading a photo. It works similarly to tagging people\u2014you just select products from your webshop to tag in the image.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve had my fair share of struggles setting it up across several profiles.<\/p>\n<p>This led me into a deep research phase to figure out the correct setup. I found and saved some helpful official Instagram guides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I recommend reviewing these if you encounter any issues:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/1627591223954487?helpref=faq_content\">Guide 1 \u2013How to get approved for Instagram Shopping<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/1108695469241257?ref=ig_shopping\">Guide 2 \u2013 How to activate Instagram Shopping<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_you_tag_products_from_other_webshops\"><\/span><strong>Can you tag products from other webshops?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is something people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/influencer-marketing-en\/\">influencer marketing<\/a> have requested for years.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, it\u2019s not possible\u2014yet.<\/p>\n<p>It would be valuable if influencers could tag products from external brands and webshops, as their outfits often include a mix of different products.<\/p>\n<p>Whether that will happen is unknown, as it would be harder for Instagram to control. But it would be a huge opportunity for both influencers and companies\u2014and bring more transparency to the revenue generated through influencer activity.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Instagram_shopping_in_stories\"><\/span>Instagram shopping in stories?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Not yet, but it\u2019s on the way and is already being beta-tested in some regions.<\/p>\n<p>The most interesting part is that statistics show people love following their favorite brands on Instagram and often get inspired to make new purchases. Stories play a big role here, as users constantly swipe through stories from friends and brands. In my experience, stories have led to many inbox inquiries for the brands I\u2019ve worked with.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5860 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Shopping-sticker-with-space-EN-1024x573-1.png\" alt=\"Instagram Shopping p\u00e5 IG Story\" width=\"1024\" height=\"573\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_you_use_Instagram_shopping_tags_in_ads\"><\/span><strong>Can you use Instagram shopping tags in ads?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, no\u2014not yet.<\/p>\n<p>With the positive feedback many brands have given Instagram, it\u2019s likely this feature will be introduced in the future. For now, attempting to use it in ads will trigger an error message.<\/p>\n<p>Instagram is rolling out this functionality slowly to manage user experience and monitor feedback through the massive amounts of data they receive.<\/p>\n<p>If Instagram Shopping tags become usable in ads, it could significantly shift the long-standing competition between Instagram\/Facebook and Google\/Amazon. Traditionally, we go to Google or Amazon with a purchase intention, while on Facebook and Instagram we\u2019re there to socialize. Shopping could change that dynamic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mw-box\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/amazon-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more about Amazon marketing here.<\/a><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Instagram_shopping_case_studies\"><\/span><strong>Instagram shopping case studies<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To keep things grounded and not just theoretical, here are two real-life cases I\u2019ve worked on\u2014both I\u2019m proud to share.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Frederik_IX_studio\"><\/span>Frederik IX studio<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>An online jewelry brand founded by the lovely duo Louise &amp; Jeppe. Frederik IX Studio is inspired by the royal family.<\/p>\n<p>We already had a large share of traffic from Instagram, and when we introduced product tagging, we observed the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A clear increase in Instagram traffic<\/li>\n<li>A record month in July despite heatwaves and a general slowdown in e-commerce<\/li>\n<li>A jump from nearly zero conversions from Instagram to a healthy stream of revenue\u2014not just \u201cdirect\u201d traffic<\/li>\n<li>Fewer questions about styles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5861 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Skaermbillede-2018-08-10-kl.-19.40.49-1024x821-1.png\" alt=\"Frederik IX Studios Instagram\" width=\"1024\" height=\"821\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tiffanydk\"><\/span>Tiffany.dk<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>An online and physical fashion retailer in Aalborg, featuring brands like Ganni, Noella, American Vintage, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Since we sell many different brands, it\u2019s crucial to keep users on our platforms instead of sending them back to Google, where they might search the brand name and end up purchasing elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Instagram Shopping is vital for multi-brand stores like Tiffany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5\u00d7 increase in Instagram traffic<\/li>\n<li>Direct correlation between tagged products and increased revenue<\/li>\n<li>Fewer inquiries about the tagged items<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5862 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Skaermbillede-2018-08-10-kl.-19.47.22-1024x797-1.png\" alt=\"Tiffany Denmark Instagram\" width=\"1024\" height=\"797\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An added benefit of driving traffic from Instagram Shopping and Stories to your site is the ability to retarget those users later. For example, someone visits a product via Instagram but doesn\u2019t buy\u2014later, they\u2019re retargeted on Facebook with one of your remarketing ads.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_future_of_Instagram\"><\/span><strong>The future of Instagram<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>People often ask me: what is the future of social media? Haven\u2019t we had enough of Facebook?<\/p>\n<p>I believe times are different now than when Facebook first launched. We\u2019re far more connected now, so switching platforms isn\u2019t so simple. It\u2019s much harder for new networks to grab our attention. Plus, technology has evolved\u2014Facebook is always scouting new acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook advertising still works extremely well. Yes, it\u2019s more expensive now, but that doesn\u2019t scare the brands I work with\u2014or me as a consultant.
