Good question!<\/p>\n<p>I want to approach this a little differently, by explaining how the concept originated and, through that, highlight what it really means to be a Growth Hacker.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the biggest success stories \u2014 like Spotify, Dropbox, and Hotmail \u2014 have experienced what\u2019s known as <a href=\"https:\/\/davidcummings.org\/2010\/12\/19\/hockey-stick-growth-for-startups\/\">\u201chockey-stick growth.\u201d<\/a> That is, not just generic growth, but extremely explosive growth where the curve resembles the blade of a hockey stick.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2391 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/forecasting-and-managing-passenger-growth-2-638.jpg\" alt=\"forecasting-and-managing-passenger-growth-2-638\" width=\"638\" height=\"442\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_hotmail_case\"><\/span>The hotmail case<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Hotmail&#8217;s growth curve<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3006 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/growthack.jpg\" alt=\"growthack\" width=\"638\" height=\"359\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>So what did Hotmail do?<\/strong> Well \u2014 they had spent millions on various TV ads trying to get more people to use their email service. Of course, they tried a range of other approaches too \u2014 but they just couldn\u2019t get their new, smart email service off the ground!<\/p>\n<p>Then, a guy (who later earned the title \u201cGrowth Hacker\u201d) suggested adding a small line at the bottom of every email sent from Hotmail.<\/p>\n<p>The line said: <em>&#8220;P.S. I love you. Get your own free e-mail account at Hotmail.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That line, as the image above shows, caused Hotmail\u2019s user base to explode, and the company was later sold to Microsoft for an enormous amount of money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are plenty of cases like this.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apple was among the first to use white earphones.<\/li>\n<li>McDonald\u2019s decided to place restaurants near highways.<\/li>\n<li>Dropbox offered new users 2GB free if they referred friends.<\/li>\n<li>Spotify integrated with Facebook so users could see what their friends were listening to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/growthhackers.com\/growth-studies\">Get all the best case studies right here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_other_side_of_the_coin\"><\/span><strong>The other side of the coin<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yes, it all sounds like a dream scenario. But the question still lingers: <em>&#8220;Do ordinary companies actually need a Growth Hacker?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>First of all, I\u2019d like to point out that everyone needs to think a bit outside the box. As the internet has \u201cmatured,\u201d it\u2019s also become increasingly difficult to break through using traditional marketing channels.<\/p>\n<p>AdWords has become too expensive for many industries, and soon only companies like Amazon can afford to compete in paid advertising while still turning a profit.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s no longer enough to lean back \u2014 thinking differently has become a necessity.<\/p>\n<p>The word <em>different<\/em> is key here. You don\u2019t need to reinvent the wheel, and you certainly don\u2019t need an employee sitting around costing DKK 50,000 per month if you\u2019re a startup \u2014 in that case, it\u2019s better to give away some equity in the company.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t obsess over titles when building a startup. Assemble a team of the coolest people, each with their own skill set. If you\u2019re an established company looking for a Growth Hacker, it\u2019s important that you have a clear goal in mind and can easily answer the questions: <em>&#8220;What do you want for your company, and what are your KPIs?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first thing a skilled Growth Hacker will ask about is data.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lack_of_knowledge\"><\/span><strong>Lack of knowledge<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One theory I\u2019ve had for a long time is that many companies still aren\u2019t skilled enough at navigating the vast ocean \u2014 the internet \u2014 and as a result, they don\u2019t really know what they\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, they want a bit of everything when hiring a marketing manager.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3012 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/forvirretsocialedmedier.jpg\" alt=\"forvirretsocialedmedier\" width=\"346\" height=\"346\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a dream scenario to find one person who can master every discipline \u2014 because that\u2019s nearly impossible, especially in such a dynamic field.<\/p>\n<p>I \u201cearned\u201d the title myself when I worked with <strong>Tattoodo.com<\/strong> \u2014 my ideas gave the company the fuel it needed to grow, and they went from being a startup to reaching 5,000,000 monthly visitors, 2,000,000 Facebook fans, and 200,000 emails.<\/p>\n<p>After that, people started calling and writing to me because they had heard about this case through the network. I am deeply thankful to <strong>Christian Stadil, Mik Thorbo, and Johan Plenge<\/strong> for that.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Micky grew our Tattoodo page from 0 to 370,000 in 8 months and to 1 million monthly visits. In the same period he took Ami James&#8217; page from 380,000 to 1.8M! A true genius! Can&#8217;t recommend him enough. Write me if you want to hear more.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mik Thorbo Carlsen<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Chairman, Tattoodo<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To me, a Growth Hacker is a technically skilled marketer who understands data, technology, and the interplay between them. They\u2019ve also, in my view, worked with many different cases and therefore have the ability to spot opportunities across various platforms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you find a Growth Hacker?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Without putting myself on a pedestal \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/marketing-education\/\">there are plenty of things I don\u2019t know either<\/a> \u2014 I\u2019ve been incredibly fortunate to start young. I\u2019ve always been a bit of a nerd, and by age 27, I had already looked into over 100 different Google Analytics accounts.<\/p>\n<p>If I were to find a Growth Hacker today, I\u2019d look for someone who masters the things I\u2019ve mentioned above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Growth Hacker can\u2019t perform magic! Remember that!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But what you <em>do<\/em> get is a tremendously valuable mind, one that can very likely give your company a serious push forward.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Building a generic business based on SEO and AdWords will never be fun \u2014 at least not for me. I\u2019m good at SEO, but I don\u2019t find it challenging or interesting.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_there_only_one_growth_hack\"><\/span><strong>Is there only one growth hack?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Of course not \u2014 in a modern company, you should always have multiple growth hacks running simultaneously. The internet has become so complex that it opens up a range of opportunities most people don\u2019t even know exist.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s also about constantly testing <em>new<\/em> hacks. As I see it, it\u2019s advantageous to run two parallel marketing tracks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3013 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Skaermbillede-2016-06-13-kl.-18.50.02.png\" alt=\"Sk\u00e6rmbillede 2016-06-13 kl. 18.50.02\" width=\"527\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The traditional channels shouldn\u2019t be deprioritized \u2014 they\u2019re great for maintaining a stable and healthy business, provided you\u2019ve got control over your channels and costs.<\/p>\n<p>Growth hacks should be seen as initiatives that can go either way \u2014 but every time you try a new hack, you learn something.
