dive into the concept of crawl depth and how it affects your SEO.<\/p>\n<p>When search engines like Google crawl your website, they follow links from one page to another to index the content. <strong>The distance a subpage is from the homepage \u2014 measured in clicks \u2014 is called <em>crawl depth.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fewer clicks it takes to reach a page, the lower its crawl depth.<\/p>\n<p>A low crawl depth means the page is more accessible to both users and search engines, while pages that require many clicks to reach have a higher crawl depth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This distance has a greater impact than many realize.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pages close to the homepage are visited more frequently by Google\u2019s crawlers, share in more internal link equity, and are indexed faster.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, pages buried deep within the site structure risk being overlooked or deprioritized \u2014 and ultimately struggle to achieve visibility in search specific subpage.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Homepage = 0 clicks (crawl depth 0)<\/li>\n<li>A category page linked from the homepage = 1 click (crawl depth 1)<\/li>\n<li>A product linked from a category page = 2 clicks (crawl depth 2), and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are several tools and methods to measure crawl depth.<\/p>\n<p>You can use website crawlers like Screaming Frog or Ahrefs\u2019 auditor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/google-search-console\/\">Google Search Console<\/a>, or internal log files to see which pages the bot actually visits.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to distinguish between crawl depth in your menu\/structure and internal linking.<\/p>\n<p>Even if a page is deep in the structure, it can still be easily accessible via internal links if you link to it from other relevant places on the site.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_crawl_depth_matters_for_growth_and_SEO\"><\/span><strong>Why crawl depth matters for growth and SEO<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Crawl depth affects multiple elements of your site and SEO performance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Indexing<\/strong> \u2013 The deeper a page is, the higher the risk that Google doesn\u2019t crawl it frequently or at all. Pages with poor internal linking or many clicks away may be \u201cforgotten.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Link authority<\/strong> \u2013 Internal links from pages near the homepage help distribute link equity. Consider keeping \u201ckey pages\u201d within 1\u20132 clicks of the homepage.<\/p>\n<p>Also ensure that important pages have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/linkbuilding\/\">internal links<\/a> from pages near the homepage (menus and related articles).<\/p>\n<p>If a subpage lies deep in the structure (2\u20133 clicks), you can add links from category or index pages to reduce click distance.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sitemap_and_XML-sitemap\"><\/span>Sitemap and XML-sitemap<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A sitemap acts as a map of your website and helps both users and search engines understand the structure.<\/p>\n<p>While a regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/sitemapping\/\">sitemap<\/a> (typically in HTML format) helps visitors navigate, an XML sitemap is specifically designed for search engines. It provides a technical overview of all important pages, their hierarchy, and update frequency.<\/p>\n<p>An updated XML sitemap makes it easier for Google and other search engines to find and index even the pages that lie deep in the structure or are not directly connected through internal links.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Continuous_monitoring\"><\/span><strong>Continuous monitoring<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Finally, use tools to regularly crawl the site and identify pages with high crawl depth that show low traffic or poor performance.<\/p>\n<p>You should then decide whether these pages should be optimized, deprioritized, or possibly removed.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_you_know_if_your_crawl_depth_is_too_high\"><\/span><strong>How do you know if your crawl depth is too high?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To determine whether your pages are too far from the homepage, look at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How many clicks it takes to reach the page \u2014 is it 3\u20135 clicks or more?<\/li>\n<li>How often the pages are visited by crawl bots (you can see this in web server logs or via crawl tools).<\/li>\n<li>Whether the pages are indexed at all. In Google Search Console, you can see non-indexed pages \u2014 sometimes simply because the bot doesn\u2019t know they exist due to poor internal linking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pages with high crawl depth often have low traffic and few internal links \u2014 a sign that they may not be performing well.<\/p>\n<p>For example, imagine a webshop with 10,000 products, where many can only be reached through 4\u20135 clicks from the homepage.<\/p>\n<p>If these pages don\u2019t receive internal links or aren\u2019t included in sitemaps, they may be poorly indexed and therefore fail to contribute to sales.<\/p>\n<p>By moving some of these products closer to the homepage, for instance through \u201cfeatured products,\u201d internal listings, or category links, you can improve their visibility in search results.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pitfalls_and_when_crawl_depth_optimization_might_not_be_enough\"><\/span><strong>Pitfalls and when crawl depth optimization might not be enough<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Although crawl depth is important, it\u2019s not a universal solution. There are cases where focusing on crawl depth alone won\u2019t yield full results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Extensive file or documentation content<\/strong> \u2013 If your site has thousands of files or documents, it may be impractical to move them all closer to the homepage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Niche content for limited audiences<\/strong> \u2013 Highly specialized or technical pages can exist deep in the structure without hurting overall SEO, if they\u2019re relevant and have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mickyweis.com\/en\/bazoom-backlinks\/\">backlinks<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speed, HTTPS, and mobile-friendliness<\/strong> \u2013 Even with optimal crawl depth, poor technical SEO can still hurt performance.
