In February 2023, Meta launched the new subscription package called “Verified by Meta,” which is said to make it possible for even more users on Facebook and Instagram to increase the visibility of their profiles and thus open the door to creating an even larger community of followers.

Previously, the iconic blue “verified” badge was reserved for digital creators and influencers with a considerable number of followers on both Facebook and Instagram. Over time, this badge has therefore become a natural status symbol among users on Facebook and Instagram and has helped increase visibility and reach for influencers and well-known personalities.

Acquiring this badge has therefore not been available as a subscription solution, something the people behind Meta are currently testing. But now, up-and-coming digital creators will have the same opportunity to increase the reach of their content and gain a larger community.

How can a profile become verified?

To be verified by Meta on either Facebook or Instagram, there are a number of requirements a profile must meet. The requirements are as follows:

  • The profile must meet Meta’s minimum requirements for continuous activity, meaning stories, posts, and other content.
  • The name on the profile must match a government-issued ID, which ensures followers that the person behind the account actually exists.
  • The person behind the profile must be at least 18 years old.

According to Meta, compliance with these requirements will be checked regularly so that users on Facebook and Instagram can be certain that verified individuals are who they claim to be.

Over time, the subscription solution will apply to all users, including businesses.

What are the benefits of a verified profile on Facebook and Instagram?

Starting in February 2023, “Verified by Meta” was tested in Australia and New Zealand. The subscription can be purchased directly in the Facebook or Instagram app for $14.99 (USD) per month, while on the web it can be purchased for $11.99 (USD) per month.

However, the subscription purchased via the web only applies to Facebook verification.

At present, users worldwide can sign up for the waiting list to become verified on Meta’s website.

According to Meta, there are several benefits to having a verified profile:

  • Increased reach and visibility of a profile, including in comment sections and in Facebook’s and Instagram’s search suggestions.
  • Users can trust the authenticity of the profile, which makes them feel safer following a verified account.
  • Verified profiles are offered monitoring by Meta to detect impersonators, further strengthening authenticity.

In the future, Meta will also expand its verification subscription to include businesses. This will naturally help create visibility and increase reach for companies and their ads, as well as ensure credibility around their products and overall messaging among users.

What the paid verification of profiles will bring, and which opportunities it will open up, remains to be seen until the rest of the world can also take part in this new launch.
