Social media – a curse or an opportunity?
Social media is here to stay; there’s no doubt about that anymore. It has become our preferred communication medium, and the younger generation can hardly be pulled away from their screens, spending most of their time on these platforms. With over 2.5 billion active users per month, Facebook is still the biggest player globally, but more and more platforms are emerging. Additionally, many of these newer platforms are becoming more attractive for advertising, as they have learned from their “big brothers,” Facebook and Google, how to build an advertising machine.
There’s a lot of debate about whether social media is an opportunity or more of a threat to our mental health. Over the past 12 years, I’ve spent millions on various platforms, and I can clearly see from a business perspective that it pays off. Whether it has a negative psychological effect, I’ll leave for psychologists and doctors to assess. There’s no doubt we need to focus on our screen time, but we’re likely not heading toward a future without technology.
