Should my business be on Instagram?

That’s a good question if you’re trying to figure out which social channels your business should be on (and advertise on).

Before we go too far, my answer is the same when it comes to social media: No matter what, you should create a profile using your business name so that no one else can take it.

Let’s take a deeper look.

What speaks for it? And what speaks against it?

Instagram is a brilliant platform—if you’re willing to put time into it. This applies whether you’re a B2B or B2C business. If you’re ready to invest the time, it’s a platform with endless potential.

As a webshop, it’s a great place to showcase products, run campaigns, and leverage influencer marketing. As a B2B company, it’s a good way to give your audience a look behind the scenes. It’s especially effective for attracting new employees, as it allows you to show more personality.

But what speaks against it?

If there’s anything that speaks against using Instagram for your business, it’s if you don’t actually use it. If it’s a platform you only update sporadically a couple of times a year, it can do more harm than good, in my opinion.

Instagram as an advertising platform

No matter what kind of business you run, it’s a good idea to test Instagram advertising. For that reason, it can be beneficial to also have an Instagram profile that users can click through to if they see your ads.

However, your business still leaves a poor impression if the profile is not kept updated.

So what are you saying, Micky? Should my business be on Instagram?

If you’re willing to put in the necessary time, then yes—be on Instagram and secure your business name. But if you’re not going to use it actively, then don’t bother.
