With the rapid development of technology, it is perhaps not surprising that today we can begin to talk about a future implementation of AGI, which has otherwise only been part of the science fiction universe, and therefore something we have only been able to imagine until now.

AGI, which stands for Artificial General Intelligence, is the development of the more common AI we know and which has already become a part of our daily lives.

Just look at how ChatGPT has taken the world by storm and has extended its machine learning techniques to other exciting initiatives such as Microsoft Copilot.

But what exactly is AI, and what can one expect from AGI? In this post, I will focus on the differences that distinguish the two phenomena.

AI – Artificial intelligence

AI is short for “Artificial intelligence” and is a machine-driven intelligence based on algorithms and mathematical programs designed to simulate human thinking using statistical machine learning.

This type of AI is also classified as “soft AI” since it requires a specific definition and delimitation of tasks before it can begin solving them.

This form of AI is used for everything from language models and image recognition to image generation, as well as the general automation of a wide range of processes across various industries.

AGI – Artificial General Intelligence

AGI is short for “Artificial General Intelligence” and is also referred to as “deep” or “strong AI.”

The idea with this form of artificial intelligence is that it should be able to possess human cognitive abilities. In other words, it should be able to think independently and, based on this, make autonomous decisions.

AGI can still best be described as a dream for the future, where this artificial form of intelligence will end up having deeper layers than the AI we know today.

In general terms, AI aims to function as a simulation of human thinking, while the goal of AGI is for it to develop a form of consciousness comparable to that of humans.

The overall objective of artificial intelligence is that in the future, it should be able to make decisions without human intervention. Development of AGI is ongoing day by day, and it is therefore only a matter of time before we get to see the first example of this form of artificial intelligence.
