At the end of 2020, LinkedIn began rolling out a feature we already know from other social media platforms – stories.

But what does that mean for you? And is it something you should take advantage of?

In this post, I’ll share my thoughts on this somewhat debated feature.

Spoiler: I’m very positive. And you should be too.

But first, let’s briefly dive into what LinkedIn stories actually are.

What are LinkedIn stories?

LinkedIn stories are very similar to stories on Snapchat and Instagram. It’s a format where you can upload a photo or short video that stays online for 24 hours. After that, it disappears.

This format is great for showing what you’re doing in the moment—whether it’s packing orders in the warehouse, visiting an exciting client, or working late at the office.

In general, it lends itself really well to giving a behind-the-scenes look—just like Instagram typically does. The big difference here is that it’s you as a professional individual, and chances are you have more connections on LinkedIn than followers on Instagram.

What can I show on LinkedIn stories?

If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably picked up on my excitement. LinkedIn stories can be used in many ways. Here are three great ideas for what you can show.

Share tips and tricks with your connections

Stories are a powerful format for those who have something on their mind—and aren’t afraid to share it. You can create stories where you offer useful tips or hacks about online marketing, communication, leadership, stress management, or insert your niche here.

It’s more personal than a written post—and you can reuse your videos as content on your other channels.

Give a glimpse into your everyday work

People are curious about what others do at work. Document your meetings, your process, and your day-to-day work by posting videos and photos from your routine. LinkedIn often becomes all business and little personality.

That’s exactly what LinkedIn stories can help change.

Use it creatively and run contests

What if you could sneak into stories that your connections are posting? Create a fun contest where one of the requirements is to upload a LinkedIn story that mentions you.

You’ll gain extra exposure and make the most of a format that is still relatively underused.

The conclusion: Yes, you should use LinkedIn stories

The conclusion is clear. Yes, you should be using LinkedIn stories. It’s a new, easy, and exciting format that helps you stand out and adds another tool to your personal branding toolbox.

Good luck!
